Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran said on Monday that financial inclusion is not a peripheral goal but lies at the core of central banking, drawing on India's experience that financial access can lead to higher incomes rather than simply following them. Speaking at the RBI Samvad 2026 event, panellists including central bank governors from Zimbabwe and Guyana stressed consumer protection, digital financial tools, support for vulnerable groups and households' ability to manage financial risks. The key message was that financial inclusion must move from access to effective usage, from participation to empowerment, and ultimately toward financial well-being and economic resilience. A separate panel on AI in finance emphasized trust, safeguards, data privacy and governance to ensure transparency, accountability and stability. The two-day Samvad 2026 seminar for central banks was inaugurated with remarks by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and a keynote by Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
