Gartner says AI risk is growing faster than AI value in organizations, but CIOs can still manage governance and deliver business value. At the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2026, analysts told more than 7,500 CIOs and IT executives that value and risk are interconnected, so CIOs must make value compound faster than risk. A survey found 58% of leaders see some positive value from AI initiatives, yet struggle to scale it across the enterprise, and only 25% of CIOs align technology and business risk. While 71% of organizations expect to deploy agentic AI within 12 months, only 21% have agentic AI governance in place. Gartner recommends using a Value-Risk Flywheel, establishing an “AI Central Bank” for coordinated governance, and cultivating AI entrepreneurs across the enterprise.
