The euro area posted a trade deficit in August, largely driven by a rise in imports, according to Eurostat data released on Friday. The deficit stood at EUR 16.1 billion, compared with a surplus of EUR 10.7 billion in July and a deficit of EUR 1.7 billion a year earlier. Goods exports rose 9.9% from a year earlier, faster than the 8.8% gain in July. Import growth accelerated sharply to 16.7% from 9.1%.
