Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, has announced plans to produce lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells at its Spring Hill plant near Nashville. The company is expected to become the first manufacturer globally to commercially produce this technology. GM says LMR cells offer 33% greater energy density than LFP chemistry at a comparable cost, complementing its high-nickel batteries and giving it more flexibility to serve different needs. Construction and facility upgrades are set to begin later this year and be completed in 2028, creating 500 new jobs on top of the plant's current 1,200 employees.
