  • Inflation next wave could be building as energy costs spread through economy

Inflation pressures are mounting as high fuel costs spread deeper into the economy, raising producer costs that could soon be passed on to consumers. The producer price index rose 1.3% from August to September and 6.3% year over year, the fastest wholesale inflation since 2022, while transportation and warehousing prices jumped 3.4% in September and are 16% higher than a year earlier. Core prices rose 2.6% year over year and 0.3% month to month, showing pressures are spreading beyond energy. Diesel averaged $6.32 a gallon versus $3.64 a year ago, raising shipping costs, and AI data center spending is pushing up chip and electrical component prices. With the Fed having already raised rates and markets expecting another hike this year, consumers may struggle to absorb further increases.
