DATA, the a16z crypto-backed startup formerly known as Story Protocol, is shutting down its blockchain and moving to Sui after a $30 million investment from the Sui Foundation. The company had raised $140 million and built its own chain, but found changing how intellectual property is licensed harder than expected, so it narrowed its focus to AI training data. Its core product, Trace, is a registry that records the origin, consent terms and licensing history of training data, and partner Kled adds between 3 million and 4 million contributions a day. CEO Andrea Muttoni said the current goal is to provide a verifiable record for buyers and sellers rather than compete with data marketplaces, though DATA has not disclosed how many records have generated licensing revenue.
