- Liquidity Plunges as Money Exits Retail, Oil & Gas and Securities Stocks
- Stock market awaits boost from trading infrastructure
SGI Capital says Vietnam's macro picture after the first three quarters of 2026 still shows bright spots, but the stock market enters the fourth quarter facing two risks: policy pressure and liquidity risk from margin leverage. After the FTSE upgrade, trading liquidity fell below VND 15,000 billion per session and foreign investors turned to heavy net selling, driven by fears of rising global inflation and interest rates. Margin debt at a historically high level is seen as a risk that could trigger forced-sale pressure as cash demand rises in the fourth quarter. Longer term, Circular 145/2026/TT-BTC, effective 16/11/2026, introduces CCP clearing and removes the 100% cash pre-funding (NPF) requirement for foreign institutional investors, which Hàn Hữu Hậu, CEO of Hy Maxpro, called an important upgrade.
- Why are securities stocks lagging despite high expectations?
Securities stocks have remained weak despite expectations of gains from FTSE Russell's market upgrade and capital market development. According to VietstockFinance, as of 09/10/2026 the sector index was down 23.46% year-to-date, much deeper than the 2.77% decline of VN-Index, and had lost 39.92% over the past year. About 80% of the 43 sector stocks were more than 20% below their recent peaks, a threshold commonly used to define a bear market. Võ Kim Phụng of Chứng khoán Beta said the sector's earnings depend on liquidity, margin lending and interest rates, and that expected gains were priced in earlier; in Q3/2026, average daily trading value on HOSE and HNX fell 58% year-on-year.
- China central bank says will introduce a number of policy measures - Xinhua
Pan Gongsheng, governor of the People's Bank of China, said the central bank will work with other financial authorities to introduce several policy measures. These include a liquidity support facility for large-scale redemptions by non-bank institutions, expanding institutions eligible for the Standing Lending Facility, and promoting connectivity between the interbank and exchange bond markets. Other measures include pilot programs for foreign financial institutions' RMB business in the onshore foreign exchange market and guidelines on financial support for international science and technology innovation centers in Beijing, Shanghai and the Greater Bay Area. He spoke at the opening of the Financial Street Forum 2026 in Beijing, running from Oct. 19 to 22.
- China central bank studies making overnight rate its main policy rate
China's central bank is considering switching its main policy rate from the seven-day reverse repo rate to the overnight reverse repo rate to improve monetary policy transmission. PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng said the interbank overnight repo rate has effectively become the bank's target rate, and the change does not amount to a rate cut. The overnight repo rate averaged around 1.25%, near a five-month low and below the 1.4% seven-day reverse repo rate. The PBOC also plans to reform loan pricing so that some strong firms can use the overnight repo rate or the LPR as the floating-rate benchmark, while widening access to its Standing Lending Facility and creating a liquidity tool for non-bank financial institutions.
- China economy accelerated in July - September quarter on robust exports
China said its economy grew 4.5% in the July–September quarter from a year earlier, up from 4.3% in April–June, helped by strong exports. Growth for the first three quarters reached 4.6%, and Beijing's full-year target is 4.5% to 5%, below last year's 5%; the IMF cut its 2026 forecast to 4.5%. Weak domestic demand, weighed down by a prolonged property slump, contrasts with booming trade: exports rose 36% last month, and the trade surplus reached $938 billion from January to September, on track to beat last year's record $1.2 trillion. Exports to the EU rose 16% in the first nine months, and the EU and China agreed this month to roughly halve Chinese hybrid vehicle imports over the next few years, though economists say trade imbalances will be hard to resolve quickly.

- Jensen Huang: “Two Gigawatts to Us Is Like $80 Billion.” 43 New Gigawatts Coming in 2027
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said two gigawatts of AI capacity, like the ones Nvidia announced in Australia, are worth about $80 billion to the company, up from about $18 billion per gigawatt previously. He attributed the increase to Nvidia now selling far more of each data center, including networking, CPUs, storage and security, not just GPUs. Citing SemiAnalysis's Dylan Patel on the BG2 podcast, Altimeter Capital's Brad Gerstner said 43 gigawatts of new AI compute will come online next year. At about $40 billion per gigawatt, Nvidia would need around 17 gigawatts to reach the $692 billion revenue estimate for fiscal 2028, though Huang said land, power and data center buildings are the main obstacles to the build-out.
- The Investment Case for JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM)
Diamond Hill's Large Cap Strategy returned 3.18% net of fees in Q3 2026, outperforming the 2.61% return of the Russell 1000 Value Index, and added JPMorgan Chase as a new holding. The firm said JPMorgan's scale should support continued technology investment that improves efficiency, helping contain expense growth and drive operating leverage. It expects below-average returns across the market due to high equity valuations, though attractive bottom-up opportunities remain. As of October 16, 2026, JPM closed at $339.72, with a $903.04 billion market cap, up 5.43% year-to-date and trading in a 52-week range of $279.10 to $366.50. Hedge fund portfolios holding JPM fell to 113 at the end of Q2 from 131 the previous quarter.
