ECB Executive Board member Philip R. Lane said the ECB and the People's Bank of China maintain regular multi-channel exchanges, building on the first annual governors' meeting in Beijing in June 2025. The two central banks lead the Network for Greening the Financial System and back the G20 roadmap for cross-border payments. Lane said China's strong exports benefit European consumers and manufacturers, and that more domestic consumption would help both sides. China's GDP grew 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, while the euro area has proved more resilient than expected, prompting the ECB to raise its 2026 and 2027 growth forecasts. Energy prices and inflation are rising due to the Middle East conflict, and the ECB has implemented two rate hikes to bring inflation back to its 2% target.

Philip R. Lane, a member of the ECB's Executive Board, said the ECB and the People's Bank of China maintain regular multi-channel exchanges that deepen China-euro area financial ties. Both institutions lead the Network for Greening the Financial System, and Lane said the G20 roadmap is the best way to advance global coordination on cross-border payments. He said more domestic consumption in China would benefit both sides, as China's GDP grew 4.5% year on year in the third quarter of 2026. The ECB has implemented two rate hikes and will not commit to future moves in advance, aiming to bring inflation back to its 2% target without derailing economic expansion.
