  • US Fed likely to hold rates in October , hike by 25 bps by year - end : CareEdge Global

CareEdge Global expects the US Federal Reserve to hold rates steady in October before resuming tightening, with markets pricing in a further 25 bps hike by end-2026 and cumulative tightening of 75 bps by mid-2027. The Fed's outlook has grown increasingly hawkish through 2026, culminating in a 25 bps hike in September amid geopolitical tensions and elevated inflation. CME FedWatch data cited by the agency show a 78.4% probability that the federal funds rate stays at 3.75-4.00% in October, and a 68.1% probability of 4.00-4.25% by December. CareEdge warns that higher rates could intensify US fiscal pressures, with gross interest payments already around 19% of government revenue in 2025. It also flagged investment uncertainty in Mexico over the USMCA review and judicial reforms, and uncertainty over Brazil's presidential race.

  • U . S . Inflation Accelerates to 3 . 7 % in September Amid AI and Energy Cost Pressures

U.S. consumer prices in September rose 3.7% from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August, and climbed 0.6% month over month, the largest monthly jump in five months. Energy was the main driver, with gasoline up more than 9% between August and September to an average of $4.33 per gallon according to AAA, and rising logistics costs pushed companies like PepsiCo to raise prices on Doritos and Ruffles. AI infrastructure spending also lifted electronics costs, with Goldman Sachs estimating AI added about 0.5 percentage points to annual inflation, and Nintendo's Switch 2 and Apple's iPhone 17 became more expensive. Core inflation rose from 2.4% to 2.6%, well above the Fed's 2% target, and although the Fed under Kevin Warsh raised rates to 3.9%, analysts say that tool is weak against supply shocks from oil and gas disruptions tied to the conflict with Iran. An AP-NORC poll found only 17% of Americans approve of the president's handling of the cost of living, and the Fed's October 27-28 meeting is widely expected to keep rates unchanged.

  • US inflation heats up as gasoline prices surge in September

The odds of another Fed rate hike jumped after September's hotter CPI report: CME Group's FedWatch Tool put the chance of a hike at the October 27 and 28 meeting at roughly 52 percent, up from about 22 percent before the release. Consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in September and 3.7 percent year over year, accelerating from 3.4 percent in August, with a 9.1 percent jump in gasoline accounting for more than half the monthly increase. Core CPI rose 0.3 percent, above the 0.2 percent Reuters forecast, and was up 2.6 percent over 12 months. LPL Financial's Jeffrey Roach said the last mile back to target could remain bumpy and keep rates elevated, while record diesel prices raise concerns about transport costs reaching supermarket prices.

  • US inflation heats up as gasoline prices surge in September

U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6% in September after a 0.4% gain in August, lifting the year-over-year rate to 3.7% from 3.4%, with a 9.1% jump in gasoline prices accounting for more than half of the monthly increase. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3%, above the 0.2% forecast by economists polled by Reuters, and was up 2.6% from a year earlier. Energy costs were pushed higher by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, and diesel prices hit record highs. Financial markets raised the chance of a Fed rate hike at the October 27 and 28 meeting to roughly 52%, from about 22% before the report, after the Fed raised rates 25 basis points in September to a range of 3.75%-4.00%. The Social Security Administration also announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027.

  • Wholesale inflation jumped last month by most in four years

The US producer price index, which tracks wholesale inflation, jumped 6.3% in September from a year earlier, up from 5.6% in August and the largest annual increase since December 2022. Monthly wholesale prices rose 1.3%, the biggest gain since March 2022, driven by gas prices that soared more than 20%. Core prices, excluding food and energy, rose 0.7% from August and 5% from a year earlier, with electricity, vegetables, shipping and airfares also climbing. The data, following a consumer price report that also accelerated, adds pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise rates, though the central bank is expected to hold steady at its meeting in two weeks and economists mostly expect a December hike. Only 17% of US adults approve of Trump's handling of the cost of living, according to an AP-NORC poll.

  • World's Largest Gold Fund Dumps Over 10 Tonnes of Gold as Prices Slide

SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold fund, continued net selling of nearly 12 tonnes of gold in the 22/10 session, bringing total sales over 2 sessions to nearly 15 tonnes and cutting its holdings to about 1,046 tonnes. Spot gold fell more than 2.8% to around USD 4,025 per ounce at the close of 22/10, and briefly dipped below USD 4,000 per ounce in the morning session of 23/10. Tensions in the Middle East pushed crude oil prices higher, raising concerns about inflation and further Fed tightening, and gold has still not attracted sustained safe-haven demand even as US Treasury yields fell. US September CPI rose 0.6% month on month and 3.7% year on year, while PPI rose 1.3% and 6.3%. Markets price about an 84% chance the Fed holds rates steady at its 27-28/10 meeting and a 16% chance of a 25 basis-point increase; September PCE data due on 29/10 is the next key factor to watch.

  • International Business : Global stocks nosedive as Meta dents AI optimism

Global stocks retreated as tech earnings failed to ease concerns about the AI outlook, with MSCI's All-World index set for its largest daily fall in two weeks, down 0.4 per cent. Meta beat third-quarter revenue expectations, but its plan to issue non-voting stock revived worries about its mounting capital commitments, and a New Mexico judge ordered it to pay a $25 billion penalty in a data privacy case. Brent crude rose nearly 3% to $112 a barrel, near a five-month high, after more Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia raised supply risks. Investors moved into government bonds, pushing the US 10-year yield down to 5.05%, below France's for the first time in 13 years, while French yields have climbed above 5% amid concerns over social unrest and debt. The France-Germany 10-year spread reached 177.7 basis points, its widest since 2011, while gold fell 1.8% to $4,070 an ounce.
