  • You can't control what John Healey does in the Budget - but you can do this

Sophie Graham, a personal finance expert at Sunny, offers practical steps people can take ahead of the Budget without making rash decisions based on speculation. Her suggestions include making full use of the annual ISA allowance of £20,000, reviewing pension contributions and employer matching, moving savings into better-paying accounts, paying down expensive debts, and building an emergency fund. She also advises reviewing household spending, cancelling unused subscriptions, and waiting for confirmed announcements before making significant financial changes. Graham warns that acting on rumours can sometimes do more harm than good.

  • The end of abundance

The article argues that the era of cheap energy, plentiful supply and falling inflation, running from the early 1980s until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has ended. The decades ahead will be shaped by a geopolitical contest over energy, industrial metals, rare earths, critical minerals and semiconductor chips, as AI, electrification and rearmament all demand heavy materials, with data centre electricity use set to more than double by 2030. Supply responds slowly because new mines take well over a decade to develop and processing is concentrated in a few countries, so a supply-constrained world is prone to stagflation, which interest rates cannot easily fix. The author argues that fiscal policy targeted at production and productivity, rather than broad subsidies, can be more effective, and that energy policy is now macroeconomic policy. The piece also recommends direct support for poorer households, investment in food, human capital and buffer stocks, and avoiding self-sufficiency at any cost.

  • £215 more a year available for united kingdom households who have savings accounts

One-year fixed savings rates have reached 4.41%, the highest since September 2024, and the average fixed rate across all terms is 4.49%. Personal finance experts say savers could earn about £215 more a year on £10,000 by choosing a 5.15% account instead of one paying 3%. Caitlyn Eastell of Moneyfacts notes that non-ISA fixed rates have risen for over six months, and top rates across all terms are above 5% for the first time since December 2023. Fixed bonds lock money away for the full term, so savers risk missing out if rates rise further. Meanwhile, £4.4 billion flowed into ISAs in August, ahead of the cash ISA changes in April.

  • 44% of Americans are missing out on the best wealth-building tool of all — are you? Here’s how to fix that

According to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, only 56% of Americans participated in the stock market in 2025, down from 58% in 2022. The article argues that stocks are a powerful wealth-building tool because of compounding: the S&P 500 has historically averaged annual returns of around 10% since 1957, while savings accounts have typically yielded under 1%. For example, investing $300 a month over a 35-year career could grow to roughly $1 million at a 10% average return, versus about $220,000 at 3%. To overcome barriers of money or knowledge, it highlights automated investing app Acorns, which rounds up everyday purchases to the nearest dollar and invests the difference in a diversified ETF portfolio.

  • Why older Americans' wealth may be helping keep consumer spending strong

Consumer spending in the U.S. has held up despite pressure from housing costs, debt and everyday expenses. Economist Ed Yardeni argues that age, not just income, better explains this resilience, calling it a 'G-shaped economy' shaped by the generational divide. A Principal Financial Group survey of 1,000 respondents found 53% of baby boomers felt able to manage their debt, versus 39% of Gen Z. Fed data show median net worth of families headed by someone 75 or older rose 37% after inflation between 2022 and 2025, while families under 35 saw a 23% decline. A JPMorgan Chase Institute report found 8.2% of individuals moved money from investments to checking accounts in the three months ending April 2026, up from 4% in 2019.

  • World's Largest Gold Fund Dumps Over 10 Tonnes of Gold as Prices Slide

SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold fund, continued net selling of nearly 12 tonnes of gold in the 22/10 session, bringing total sales over 2 sessions to nearly 15 tonnes and cutting its holdings to about 1,046 tonnes. Spot gold fell more than 2.8% to around USD 4,025 per ounce at the close of 22/10, and briefly dipped below USD 4,000 per ounce in the morning session of 23/10. Tensions in the Middle East pushed crude oil prices higher, raising concerns about inflation and further Fed tightening, and gold has still not attracted sustained safe-haven demand even as US Treasury yields fell. US September CPI rose 0.6% month on month and 3.7% year on year, while PPI rose 1.3% and 6.3%. Markets price about an 84% chance the Fed holds rates steady at its 27-28/10 meeting and a 16% chance of a 25 basis-point increase; September PCE data due on 29/10 is the next key factor to watch.

  • International Business : Global stocks nosedive as Meta dents AI optimism

Global stocks retreated as tech earnings failed to ease concerns about the AI outlook, with MSCI's All-World index set for its largest daily fall in two weeks, down 0.4 per cent. Meta beat third-quarter revenue expectations, but its plan to issue non-voting stock revived worries about its mounting capital commitments, and a New Mexico judge ordered it to pay a $25 billion penalty in a data privacy case. Brent crude rose nearly 3% to $112 a barrel, near a five-month high, after more Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia raised supply risks. Investors moved into government bonds, pushing the US 10-year yield down to 5.05%, below France's for the first time in 13 years, while French yields have climbed above 5% amid concerns over social unrest and debt. The France-Germany 10-year spread reached 177.7 basis points, its widest since 2011, while gold fell 1.8% to $4,070 an ounce.
