  • Inflation drives up family expenses by hundreds per month since Jan . 2025

Using its Get the Facts tool, the article estimates that a sample family of four with two children in daycare and a pet now pays about $275 more each month for everyday expenses than in January 2025. Consumer prices rose 3.7% over the past year and producer prices 6.3%, with inflation outpacing average hourly wage growth. By category, groceries rose about 3.5%, electricity about 10% and gasoline nearly 40% since Trump took office. An AP-NORC poll found 25% of U.S. adults approve of Trump's handling of the economy and 19% approve of his handling of the cost of living, while a separate poll found 65% of adults said higher-than-usual prices were the result of his policies.

  • US consumers are muscling through higher prices , but for how long ? - The Business Journal Inflation Rises as High Gas Prices Strain Consumers Despite Strong Spending

Inflation accelerated in September as higher gas and diesel prices lifted costs in shipping, warehousing and wholesale food, with the producer price index up 6.3% from a year earlier and consumer inflation at 3.7%. Despite this, consumers kept spending: retail sales rose 0.8% from August, more than economists had forecast, driven by a 6.4% jump at gas stations, while sales excluding gas rose just 0.2%. The job market remains relatively firm, with weekly jobless claims below 200,000, though September hiring slowed to 29,000 jobs and inflation-adjusted paychecks fell from a year earlier for the first time since May. Economists warn persistent inflation could erode spending power, and Fed minutes show most officials expect another rate increase this year after the September rise to about 3.9%.

  • Retail sales up 0 . 8 % in September , but a big chunk of spending went to paying gasoline bills

U.S. retail sales rose 0.8% in September after a revised 1.3% gain in August, beating the 0.3% increase economists expected, according to FactSet. Excluding gas stations, sales rose only 0.2%, as gas station receipts jumped 6.4% amid gasoline prices that have climbed to $4.33 a gallon from under $3 before the war began. Furniture stores rose 1.3%, electronics and appliance stores 0.6%, online retailers 0.3% and restaurants 1.1%, while clothing stores were unchanged. The figures are not adjusted for inflation, which accelerated to 3.7% year over year in September from 3.4% in August; Oxford Economics said the headline jump was almost entirely due to gasoline and expects spending to lose momentum heading into the holidays. BDO's Natalie Kotlyar cautioned that the gain reflects higher prices more than broad consumer strength, as shoppers lean on savings and promotions.

  • Retail sales up 0 . 8 % in September , but a big chunk of spending went to paying gasoline bills

U.S. retail sales rose 0.8% in September after a revised 1.3% gain in August, beating economists' expected 0.3% increase, but excluding gas stations sales rose only 0.2% even as gas station business jumped 6.4%. Gains were also seen at furniture stores (1.3%), electronics and appliance stores (0.6%), online retailers (0.3%) and restaurants (1.1%), while clothing stores were flat. The figures are not adjusted for inflation, which accelerated to 3.7% year over year in September from 3.4% in August as gasoline and many other goods became more expensive; AAA put regular gasoline at $4.33 per gallon. Oxford Economics' Michael Pearce said the headline jump was almost entirely due to gasoline prices and expects spending to lose momentum into the holiday season. BDO's Natalie Kotlyar said the report does not reflect broad consumer strength, as many shoppers are relying on savings and promotions.

  • Inflation Rose to 3.7% in September. Is It Time to Sell the S&P 500?

Consumer prices rose 3.7% over the 12 months through September, up from 3.4% in August, with gasoline accounting for much of the jump. On the day of the report, the S&P 500 fell about 1.1% to near 7,719. Using data since 1950, the author found the index rose the following year in about 69% of months when inflation was at 3.5% or higher, with an average gain of roughly 7%, versus about 79% and 11% after readings below 3%. Most of the 337 high-inflation months fell in the 1970s and 1980s, and outcomes depended heavily on timing. The author argues this record does not justify selling an index fund for a long-term holder, but expected gains should be lower.
