Google to preview crypto custody security system as AI threats grow

Google will unveil Google Multi-Party Compute (MPC), a service that splits a private key into fragments distributed across separate systems to help financial institutions custody and transfer cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets. The product is in private preview, with several design partners and major financial institutions testing it, and Alphabet has begun using it to secure its own assets on Ethereum and Solana; commercial availability is planned for early 2027, with pricing undisclosed. Chainalysis reported that compromised private keys accounted for 43.8% of cryptocurrency stolen in 2024, while DeFiLlama data showed $16.69 billion in cumulative hack and exploit losses as of June, roughly 40% linked to private-key compromises. Google says the complete private key is never stored in one place, reducing the risk of asset takeover even if a single machine is compromised.

  • Google Says AI Isn't Building Itself Yet—Even Though It Writes 75% of the Code

Google DeepMind's safety report on its Gemini 4 Argon model found no statistically significant acceleration in AI research, with its capability index rising a steady 0.1 points per month. Although most production code at the lab is more than 75% AI-written, about 88% of pull requests still need human steering or human-written code. Argon solved roughly half of the internal research engineering tasks it completed, well below the 90% score DeepMind treats as a red flag for full automation. DeepMind concluded the risk from AI-driven ML R&D is currently low, but acknowledged the report covers only its own lab and cannot rule out that an unrestricted Argon crosses its danger thresholds for cyberattacks and bioweapons information.

  • GoDaddy, Infoblox, Google and Cloudflare Demonstrate Secure AI Agent Transactions Across Platforms

GoDaddy, Infoblox, Google and Cloudflare, working with Singapore's IMDA, unveiled the Chain of Trust, an open reference architecture that helps organizations discover, identify and authenticate AI agents throughout a transaction. McKinsey estimates AI agents could facilitate $3 trillion to $5 trillion in global consumer purchases by 2030, yet most platforms still verify agents through closed systems. The architecture uses open standards such as DNS, ANS, SPIFFE, OAuth, A2A, MCP, AP2 and UCP across layers from discovery to payment and audit. In a simulated flight purchase from Madrid to Singapore, agents on different clouds and platforms completed a transaction using signed mandates and identity checks.

  • Dashlane Report Names Google, GitHub and HubSpot as Passkey Leaders, yet Adoption Gap Emerges

Dashlane's third annual Passkey Power 20 report finds passkeys account for 28% of measured Google logins, 23% at GitHub, 21% at HubSpot, 6% at Microsoft and 4% at OpenAI, so fewer than three in 10 logins at Google use a passkey. The share of Dashlane users storing at least one passkey rose from 40% to 57% over the past year, and monthly passkey authentications nearly doubled to 2.5 million. Passkey authentication grew sharply from Q1 to Q2 2026 at BetMGM (391%), Experian (383%), Gusto (354%), Meta (310%) and Ticketmaster (218%). Dashlane argues that services should make phishing-resistant authentication the default rather than an optional feature, since widespread use is still some way off.

  • Bithumb Says Hackers Accessed Internal System, Leaking Personal Data

South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb said an unauthorized outside party accessed its internal mobile groupware system, leading to a leak of personal information, and is investigating whether customer data was affected; an industry source told Yonhap that some customer information had leaked. The same day, brokerage Daishin Securities reported that personal data of 38,490 customers, including names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers, was leaked, and asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments confirmed a hacking incident, with financial authorities beginning inspections. The breaches follow attacks on 16 South Korean financial firms that caused around 100,000 data leaks, according to the Financial Services Commission. Bithumb has not said how its system was accessed.

  • Coinbase Customer Data Hit in Analytics Vendor Breach, Funds ‘Not Impacted’

Coinbase said a security incident at Amplitude, a third-party analytics provider, affected contact data of a “small subset” of its customers, but it found no evidence of unauthorized access to its own systems and customer funds were not affected. It is notifying affected customers and regulators in line with its legal obligations, but has not disclosed how many customers were affected, what data was exposed, or when the incident occurred. The incident came 17 months after Coinbase disclosed a 2025 breach in which cybercriminals bribed overseas customer support agents to steal personal data of less than 1% of its monthly transacting users. In September, hardware wallet maker Trezor also reported that a breach at shipping provider ShipMonk exposed data of 67,000 U.S. customers.

  • Coinbase denies systems breach, says vendor exposed customer data

Coinbase said an incident at analytics vendor Amplitude exposed the contact data of some customers, but it found no evidence of unauthorized access to its own systems. The incident affected a “small subset” of Coinbase customers and other Amplitude clients, and Coinbase said customer funds were not affected. The disclosure came alongside other reports that day, including South Korean brokerage Daishin Securities, which reported a leak of personal and credit information for 38,490 customers, and a breach investigation at Bithumb. Coinbase had also disclosed a separate data breach in May 2025 affecting less than 1% of its monthly transacting users, with reimbursement and remediation costs estimated at up to $400 million.

  • How Anthropic's IPO structure could become the AI blueprint

Alex Morris, CEO and CIO of F/m Investments, discussed with Yahoo Finance's Brooke DiPalma what Anthropic's IPO could mean for the broader AI landscape. He said the company's revenue is not where a multi-trillion-dollar company would be expected, but it is selling a promise of the future, and its filing discusses potential existential risks to humanity. Wall Street will focus on the new governance structure, in which seven people would have power to largely control and appoint the board of trustees, a setup he called novel despite Google's different voting rights. He also flagged financing risk, more for Nvidia than Meta, as Meta announced a $100 billion share sale to fund AI. He said Anthropic is very likely to be substantially oversubscribed.

  • US warns of possible military action against Iran after Nov. 3

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US has told some Gulf Arab states to prepare for a short, intense military campaign after the midterm elections, and the Pentagon is evacuating US personnel from Middle East bases where they could be at risk. President Donald Trump has not made a final decision but is leaning toward a large-scale strike that could target Iran's infrastructure and nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called for meeting Iran's conditions to end the war and the state of “no war, no peace,” and discussed with Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei maintaining control of the Strait of Hormuz. The US and Israel attacked Iran from Feb. 28; after a June ceasefire memorandum, the US resumed large-scale strikes on the night of July 8, accusing Tehran of violating the Hormuz terms. The strait carries about 25% of global oil and about 20% of global LNG.

  • Dissent and more: 3 things to watch for at the Fed meeting

The Fed will announce its rate decision at 2 p.m. ET, with Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference half an hour later. The FOMC is expected to hold the benchmark rate at 3.75%–4%; if three or more voting members favored a hike, it would signal growing urgency to tighten, potentially bolstering the Dollar Index and weighing on bitcoin. The 10-year Treasury yield has fallen to 5%, down 36 basis points since Oct. 7, easing financial conditions. Consumer price inflation has exceeded expectations for two straight months, oil remains near $100, and U.S. diesel prices are at record highs, so Warsh's comments on inflation will be closely watched. Bitcoin was trading at $81,411, up more than 2% over 24 hours, ahead of the meeting.

  • XRP Ledger developers propose creating wallets with zero XRP for stablecoin payments

XRP Ledger developers are testing a SponsoredAccountCreate transaction, submitted Oct. 15, that lets an existing account create a new account and cover its reserve, so new wallets can hold zero XRP. Each account currently must lock a minimum of 1 XRP, so a company creating 100,000 accounts would need 100,000 XRP; under the proposal, the sponsor would pay this reserve without controlling users' private keys and could also cover transaction fees. The change would support Ripple's embedded wallets built with Stripe-owned Privy for XRP and RLUSD payments, including AI-agent payments, which currently need XRP funding to become active. The code remains under review with two unresolved automated findings and depends on a sponsorship amendment that had secured 11 of the 29 validator votes required as of Oct. 19.

  • 'We'll be out of business': Jensen Huang bet his last dollars on a chip he never held in his hands — and it saved Nvidia

In 1997, with about six months of cash left, Nvidia ordered mass production of the RIVA 128 graphics chip, which had never existed physically and had been tested only in an emulator. To get that tool, the company bought the inventory of a struggling emulator seller with about half of its remaining cash, and it laid off more than half its staff, cutting headcount from about 100 to 40, while receiving a $5 million investment from Sega. The chip shipped in August 1997 supporting only eight of Microsoft DirectX's 32 blend modes, and sold roughly a million units in its first four months, paving the way for the 1999 IPO. Nvidia was worth about $1.1 trillion when the Acquired podcast was recorded in 2023 and is now around $5.3 trillion. The stock has risen about 880% over five years, versus about 70% for the S&P 500, but shares slipped slightly after an 85% year-over-year revenue jump in its fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings.
